is a theoretical physicist, known for his contributions in gravitational physics and astrophysics. A longtime friend and colleague of Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan, he was the Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) until 2009 and is one of the world’s leading experts on the astrophysical implications of Einstein’s general theory of relativity. He continues to do scientific research and was the scientific consultant and an executive producer for the 2014 science fiction film Interstellar.
Shortly after the film was released, Kip published his book The Science of Interstellar which goes into a lot of detail about how Kip worked out the details of the science. When the SYJ hosts, Kevin and Owen, met with Andy Weir, author of The Martian, he voiced some scepticism about some of the more dubious components of the intergalactic tale. There was only one thing to do and that was have Kip send a signed copy directly to Andy.
